Grab Your Hoe! Now Is The Time To Plant a Fall Garden

The weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend and it is the perfect time to start a Fall garden and get those pansies in the ground. Some local Georgia experts offer up a lot of great tips on what to plant and when to do it. Read Walter Reeve's calendar HERE for a week-by-week breakdown of what you should be doing in your yard.

As for veggies, plant or transplant the following now: beets, broccoli, cabbage,carrots, collards, lettuce, mustard, onions,radishes, spinach and turnips.  It's also a great time to:

  • Refurbish mulch to control weeds, and start adding leaves and other materials for the compost pile.
  • Store your manure under cover to prevent leaching of nutrients. Water deeply and thoroughly to prevent drought stress. Pay special attention to new transplants.

Let's Grow Some Grass

Now that it finally feels like Fall around here, it's time to think about what you should be doing in your yard to keep your home looking beautiful thru the Winter. Particularly if you have your home on the market now, make sure you take these steps to keep it looking pretty for potential buyers.

Georgia Organics offers this grass-growin' tip: Cool season grasses like fescues should be overseeded in the Fall, ideally at the same time you aerate. Cut the grass then rake hard to remove any debris. Sow seed over the existing grass and rake gentlly. Apply an organic fertilizer and water it well. When the grass reaches 3 to 4 inches, cut it again.

To keep things blooming, plant your Fall flowers now. Mack Furlow, owner of a great local nursery, Seasonal Color Greenhouses , said October is the best time to plant Pansies, Snapdragons, Violas and other Fall annuals. Community Garden Efforts Blossom in Athens

People looking to save on the grocery bill or reassure themselves about recent concerns over food safety have spurred a gardening boom. The trend has hit even the White House, where Michelle Obama recently planted a vegetable garden on the White House lawn.

Call it a "kitchen garden," a "recession garden" or a "victory garden" - uncertain times seem to have spurred a need to have a supply of food close at hand.
