Athens Clarke County Public Library, Main Auditorium
(2025 Baxter Street, Athens, GA 30606)

This spring UGAs Russell Library invites you to participate in a film and discussion series that will explore the ways in which inequities and discrimination shape our health. Joining with partners from the UGA and Athens communities, the Russell Library will host public screenings of the seven-part documentary film, Unnatural Causes, a film that focuses on the social and economic factors that shape diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and infant mortality and illness.
This Sunday the event will begin with a screening of the documentary’s fifth episode,“Place Matters.” This thirty minute segment considers how policies and investment decisions create living environments that harm—or enhance—the health of residents and what actions can make a difference.  Following the film, panelists Nik Heynen (Dept. of Geography), Robb Nielsen (Family and Consumer Sciences), John Vena (College of Public Health), and Crissy Marlowe  (Georgia Dept. of Community)Affairs will engage in  an open dialogue with the audience. The program will conclude with a light reception of healthy snacks.
