Announcement: Urban Redevelopment Meeting Saturday

Historic preservationists and urban planners are hoping a Saturday symposium at Ciné will titillate local citizens’ imaginations about redevelopment possibilities in downtown Athens.

“We’re hoping for a little bit of a wow factor,” said Amy Kissane, executive director of the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, which has organized the one-day event. “The reason were doing this is to broaden people’s ideas about what can happen in downtown from an architectural standpoint and new construction, to public art and transportation in and out of downtown.”

The symposium, titled “Look at That! Fresh Approaches in Urban Redevelopment for Athens,” will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Ciné, 234 W. Hancock Ave. Registration costs $15, which includes lunch, and reservations are required. The deadline for signing up is Tuesday. Hilarious Winner of the Congress of New Urbanism Video Contest!

Click HERE for a must-watch, hilarious video! The Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), the leading international organization promoting walkable, neighborhood-based development as an alternative to sprawl, announces the winner of its 2009 video contest. The team of First + Main Media from Julian, CA and Paget Films from Buffalo, NY, award-winning documentary film producers, won for their short film entitled Built to Last.

The outstanding 3-minute video asks the question “What’s the greatest threat to our planet?” and shows how reimagining our cities and suburbs to be sustainable and walkable will cut carbon emissions, commutes and calories. "When it comes to saving the planet, what we build is the greatest threat…or the greatest hope," say the filmmakers in Built to Last.

The Virtues of In-Town Living

All over the country, we are seeing demand grow for in-town living opportunities. It's not just the younger generations, either. Baby boomers see the virtues of in-town living, as well. Some of the advantages include:

  • Reduction in time spent in the car, which lessens air pollution
  • Promotes personal health because people tend to walk and excercise more
  • Convenience - you can walk to banks, shops and restaurants
  • It's less costly to provide services to in-town residents, which benefits the community
  • Lots to do!

One of the "greenest" things you can do is recycle an older home in-town. By renovating an already existing structure, you are extending the life of the home and preserving a piece of your town's history.
