About Chicopee-Dudley

The Chicopee-Dudley neighborhood is located at the Eastern edge of the Historic Downtown District, just across the River. It derives its name from both the Chicopee Mill, which predates the Civil War, and Dudley Park, a green gem of a park that lies next to the river at the base of Downtown and is just a few blocks from the University of Georgia's North campus. This is one of the oldest established areas in Athens, and much of its housing takes the form of classic millhouses or farmhouses, although many builders have recently begun to build infill houses in the area due to the high demand for living close to campus and downtown. It's one of the greenest of the in-town neighborhoods, featuring Dudley Park, the new 118 acre East Athens Park lies along its Northern boundary, Greenway (walk/bike) Trails run along the River that defines the South-West boundary, and there is a proposed Rails-to-Trails path which will run the Southern boundary of the neighborhood and tie into Downtown's multi-modal transportation center (which may one day become the station for a commuter train line between Athens and Atlanta).
This neighborhood may be most well-known for its ties REM, the world-famous rock band that hails from here.  Not only did they feature the now-famous railroad trestle in Dudley Park on the back cover of their 1983 record, “Murmur”, they also took the name for their 1992 record, “Automatic for the People”, from a sign above the entrance to the well-known neighborhood soul food restaurant, Weaver D’s.
